The Zune goes on sale today. The software installation process looks brutal, the accompanying Zune Marketplace uses a customer-hostile prepaid “points” system, the “Hello from Seattle” message on the back of the device is a cheap imitation of “Designed by Apple in California,” and the “Welcome to the Social” tagline is just plain ridiculous. I’d love nothing more than to see a viable competitor to the iPod, but the first incarnation of the Zune doesn’t seem like it’s going to do the job.
